An admissions interviewer may ask why you chose a particular course. The most useful preparation is to understand the actual course and explain how it connects to your own experience. A generic answer about studying in Australia says little about that fit.

Read the course details first

Check the provider's course page for subjects, duration, entry requirements, delivery location and likely study workload. If you are an international student, Australia's CRICOS register lets you check registered providers and courses. Write down two or three details that genuinely matter to your choice.

  • Which subjects or practical components are relevant to you?
  • How does the level of study compare with your previous qualification?
  • What questions do you still need to ask the provider?

Connect the course to your background

Explain the steps that brought you to this choice: previous study, work, interests or a change in direction. A change is easier to understand when you can describe why it makes sense for you. Use your own examples and be clear where you are still exploring options.

Keep your answer specific and accurate

Do not rely on a memorised script. Check factual details with the provider, including the campus and course name, and answer the question asked. If you do not know something, say what you would check. Australia's Genuine Student guidance also describes the information requested in the separate student visa process.
